Executive Summary

Over the past decade, the GCC region has accelerated its transition towards sustainable energy sources spearheading ambitious renewable energy projects in solar, wind and nuclear technologies.  With the world rapidly transitioning from hydrocarbon wealth the region is blessed with to renewable and clean energy sources, the GCC countries are catching up with numerous innovative projects.

Landmark initiatives such as Saudi Arabia’s Vision 2030 and UAE’s Energy Strategy 2050 have positioned the region as a global leader in sustainable energy development. Significant investment in renewable energy projects is likely to bear fruit by creating numerous employment opportunities in installation, maintenance, research and development, and energy management of green energy which enables economic diversification and supports skilled green workforce development.

With most of the GCC countries targeting net zero emissions by 2060, the region is tackling complex challenges such as the dependency on oil and gas for the economic growth of the region, topped by freshwater scarcity and extreme climates which pose greater risk for maintenance and efficiency of the renewable energy technologies. Despite the roadblocks the region has set sail towards a sustainable future, balancing traditional energy investments with their novel renewable initiatives. The GCC countries seek to create a sustainable landscape that addresses both the economic and environment challenges.
